I bought this drama four years ago in VCD format. The story was as good as any other Qiong Yao drama. The theme song at the beginning of each episode was so beautiful, and proved to be an integral part of the movie. The video quality of the VCD was very poor, but at least you would still be able to watch and enjoy the whole drama. When the DVD version was released, I though it would be much better then my VCD version. Besides the fact that it was in DVD format, everything else was a total disappointment. Here are the reasons:
1) The theme song was replaced by an unknown song sung by a totally unknown singer. I can say I am pretty much open-minded to all songs and singers. But this one was an “F” both the categories of the song and the singer. It was like a dead fly being dropped into a delicious Chinese dish.
2) Every episode was interrupted in 10-15 minute intervals by a 10-second clip of someone singing. It was like looking at a beautiful scene through a window, then hearing sharp nails scratch down that window every ten minutes – very annoying!
3) The video quality was slightly better then that of the VCD, but a lot of poorly done digital enhancement was clearly visible.

The removal of a famous theme song really put a big damper on the spirit of the movie already. However, hearing the original theme song replaced with such an awful and irritating voice was what really killed this new DVD release – I was very disappointed. Who would have thought that CTS would have allowed this to happen? If you already have the VCD version, stick with it – it is not worth the money to trade a beautiful, well-done movie with a wonderful theme song for a slight improvement in video quality.
